168 ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (Evening Classes)

GENERAL INFORMATION
Pamukkale University English Language and Literature Department started its studies in 2001. The instruction language is English. In the first year, literary terms and concepts are taught with a focus on the various literary texts that form the basis of English literature, as well as an overview of English culture and literature. In the second, third and fourth years, the developmental adventure of English literature is examined throughout chronological periods, in a system which also emphasizes the cultural and historical characteristics of the selected canonical texts of literary genres such as poetry, theatre, novel, and short story. Thus, the students learn to examine, reinterpret, and criticize examples of these genres in a variety of ways provided by the essential and contemporary literary theory and criticism.

Objective
English Language and Literature is a department where students with proficient knowledge of English specialize in this field by carrying out studies in a wide area, examining and criticizing English Language, Literature and Culture within the framework of the essential and contemporary literary theories. The main aim is not only to teach English Literature and Culture but also to encourage and enable students to gain new perspectives and analytical thinking skills, and thus, to generate objective interpretations and approaches within the general academic and ethical framework. Some other complementary aims are teaching and practicing English writing, translation, speaking, comprehension, and interpretation competently through literary text analysis.


Admission Requirements
Students are required to get sufficient point in University entrance exams held annually by the Student Selection and Placement Committee.

Graduation Requirements
Students are required to complete all compulsory and elective courses in the curriculum successfully with no failing grades, and have a minimum CGPA requirement as stated in Pamukkale University’s undergraduate program guidance.

Career Opportunties
Graduate students have the opportunity to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, banks, tourism firms, in various schools as language teachers.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Students can trace the historical development process of the English Language and Literature and acquire advanced theoretical and applied knowledge supported by textbooks, application tools, and other resources containing current information in this field.
2Students acquire knowledge about important artistic movements in European cultural and civilizational history, such as the Renaissance, Reformation, Age of Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution.
3Students acquire sufficient knowledge about one of the other European languages (German/French) and can recognize expressions and terms related to the field.
4Students can interpret and evaluate literary texts using advanced knowledge and skills in their field, conduct language analyses, and analyze and produce interpretations and conclusions based on research and evidence. They can convey these interpretations and conclusions through written and oral communication.
5Students possess the necessary current theoretical and applied knowledge and skills in order to be able to translate between different types of texts from English to Turkish and Turkish to English.
6Students acquire knowledge of American culture, literature, and history, and they can compare it with English literature.
7Students have sufficient knowledge of analysing literary texts, critical approaches to literary texts, and language education and teaching.
8⁠Students acquire necessary knowledge such as researching sources for academic writing, summarizing sources, quoting, and conducting studies in accordance with social, scientific, and ethical values.
9Students develop a sense of social responsibility, can apply the studies in their field to the institutions they work for, and can bring about innovations.
10By gaining advanced field knowledge, students can pursue theoretical studies, collaborate with their colleagues, and develop projects.
11Students will acquire a thorough understanding of the phonetic, morphological, semantic, and etymological components of the English language, enabling them to enhance their proficiency in other courses within their respective fields.
12Students can benefit from various fields in the social sciences, such as history, literature, art history, law, sociology, and philosophy, within an interdisciplinary framework.

LecturingLecturing is one of the methods that come first, where the teacher is in the center. It is a method where the teacher actively describes topics and the students are passive listeners. With this method, lesson proceeds in the form of report, description and explanation.
DebateDepending on the situation, debate is a tool that allows all students, or a specific portion of the class to participate in the lesson. In this method, members of the group discuss a topic by addressing the various points of view and discuss alternative opinions about problem-solving.
DemonstrationIn this method the teacher demonstrates, an experiment, test, in front of the class. And then assists students to do so too. Students learn not only by just by looking and watching, but also by taking part and participating. This method is usually applied when teaching skills.
