Course Objective
To introduce the physics and chemistry of transport and mixing of substances in the hydrosphere by learning to: • Understand the effects of diffusion, advection, dispersion, and chemical reactions on concentrations in the environment • Evaluate the important processes affecting fate and transport • Apply the governing transport equation to solve problems with diverse boundary and intial condition • Synthesize the analysis tools developed in the course to solve real-world transport problems
Course Content
Basic principles, diffusion and dispersion in natural environment, mathematical solutions of diffusion equation, diffusion on turbulent environment, continuous and intermittent sources in turbulent flow, longitudinal dispersion, determination of dispersion coefficients, dispersion under tide. .
