COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Type Elective
Course Objective This seminar on the philosophy of geography is particularly concerned with the 'where'. In tracing the emergence of geography as a distinct academic discipline and sharing some of the key philosophical ideas that underpin this history
Course Content We will read one or more new geographical articles that illuminate a philosophical approach (or approaches) to geography. But you will also do your own primary reading and research about the times and places in question. Extensive knowledge of world history is not a requirement for this course, but an interest in history is. So is an interest in intellectual history, because geography is distinct only in an institutional sense, and shares it with many other fields, from biology to economics to literature. These three examples were chosen because geography has at times claimed and continues to claim affinities with the sciences, social sciences and humanities. As we shall see, this diversity has been a seemingly endless source of concern for geographers and many of their critics, but it can also be an important indicator of the complexity of the world.
