COURSE DESCRIPTION

Master's Degree
Course Type
Elective
Course Objective
Within the scope of this course, it is aimed to examine the historical development of the concept of the city and to learn the economic and sociological dimensions of the urban transformation processes.
Course Content
Capitalist cities are places where power and power relations are reproduced and dominant relations of production and distribution are organized. The spatial transformation process, which gained a new dimension since the second half of the 1980s, when capitalist capital accumulation went into a bottleneck, led to the beginning of a new transformation phase in medium and small-scale cities as well as in metropolises. Within the framework of the search for profitable investments that will increase the speed of capital turnover, neoliberal urbanism has transformed the capital accumulation process into a phenomenon that reproduces the urban space and increases the domination of the capitalist classes. In the transformations in the world and in Turkey, on the one hand, the reshaped relations between the state and capital with neoliberal policies include efforts to reorganize the right ownership in urban areas in favor of the rising classes, on the other hand, it erodes the public spatial existence of the city by completely commodifying the urban space. In the neoliberal urbanization process, transformations sometimes increase the economic, social and environmental quality of the space, and sometimes, on the contrary, can lead to collapse and deterioration. The aim of this course is to discuss the different dimensions of urban transformation, to understand its basic dynamics, to better understand urban transformation applications, and to contribute to the implementation of applications for the benefit of society.
