Course Objective This course aims to examine the development of the literature in the 21st century and its relationship with previous paradigms of literary study, the variety of generic forms being adapted, challenged and reworked in the 21st century English literature, the issues that contemporary literature are engaged with and the importance of fiction as a crucial platform for political engagement and the role of utopian and dystopian critique and the revival of religious imaginaries in 21st-century literature.
Course Content This module offers students the opportunity to explore the British novel and its formal and thematic developments from 2000 to the present day. Through a focused study of 21st century English literature and its conceptual and political contexts, this module is designed to equip students to understand the contemporary literary and academic landscape in the UK, and to support students to pursue their research interests in contemporary literature as a vital literary form today and part of the thriving publishing industry.

1The students analyse the stylistic and thematic novelties brought by media and popular culture to literature.
2 studies and analyses technically the influence of media and popular culture on literature.

4identifies and analyses the ambiguities caused by the elements of popular culture or their contributions to the language of the novel.
5reads and criticises the novels written under the influence of media with the elements of popular culture from the perspective of contemporary critical theories.
6understands the mutual contributions of popular culture and novel to each other.
7observes the differences between classical novels and popular novels written with the elements of popular culture.
8writes term papers on the comparison of popular culture and novel.
9prepares comparative and critical presentations by reading a novel alongside with its elements of popular culture.
10applies theories of novel and criticism in popular culture analyses.
