Course Objective Explain the importance and use of molecular genetics in todays medicine. Assess and understand papers written in the field of molecular genetics. Discuss the methodology of papers written in the field of molecular genetics and state alternative applicable approaches to the given methodology. Identify the development, structure and function of cell and its subcomponents. Evaluate the biochemical process of the cell. Clarify how significant molecular biology and how we can utilize molecular biology. Explain what the human molecular biology is based on. Explain how genes are organized in prokaryote, eukaryotes and function of regulatory elements. Explain how constitutive and inducible gene expression achieved in organisms. Express chromosomes harboring genes causing pathology in human. Distingiush genetic disease caused by monogenic disorders and multifactorial disorders. Clarify all genetic disorders in man with respective mechanisms, chromosomal basis of genetic disorders. Express chromosomal basis of genetic disorders such as diseases caused by anoploidies and mechanism of inheritance and maternal inheritance.
Course Content The Origin and Evolution of Cells; The Molecules of Cells; Cell Membranes; Cell Metabolism and Evolution of Metabolism; Fundamentals of Molecular Biology: Heredity, Genes and DNA, Expression of Genetic Information, Recombinant DNA, Detection of Nucleic Acids and Proteins, Gene Function in Eukaryotes; The Complexity of Eukaryotic Genomes; Chromosomes and Chromatin; The Sequences of Complete Genomes; DNA Replication; DNA Repair; Recombination between Homologous DNA Sequences, DNA Rearrangements; Transcription in Prokaryotes; Regulation of Transcription in Eukaryotes, RNA Processing; Translation of mRNA, Protein Folding and Processing, Regulation of Protein Function, Protein Degradation. Nucleus, The Nuclear Envelope and Traffic between the Nucleus and the Cytoplasm, The Nucleolus and rRNA Processing; Protein Sorting and Transport: The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, and Lysosomes; Mitochondria, The Mechanism of Oxidative Phosphorylation, Peroxisomes; The Cytoskeleton and Cell Movement; Cell Cycle and Cell Divisions (Mitosis and Meiosis); Fundamentals of Genetics: Terminology,Mendel’s Laws, Mendelian Genetics; Relations of Genes (Deviations of Mendel’s Ratios); Non-Mendelian Heredity; Modes of Heredity; Chromosomal Aberrations in Man; Single Gene Diseases in Man.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1To be able to define structure and functions of cell and its components; Ability to explain cell cycle, divisions and control mechanisms.
2The ability to explain the structure of chromosomes and chromosome-related diseases and to know about the causative agents and the ways of protection.
