Course Objective What is visual culture? What are the elements of semiotics and design? Introduction to thinkers on semiotics such as Saussure & Barthes, Walter Benjamin, and John Berger. Introduction to Jean Baudrillard's concepts of Simulation Simulacra. It is aimed that students acquire skills and intellectual knowledge on visual interpretation, criticism and creativity.
Course Content What is Visual Culture? Why do we need it? Reproduction and Representation John Berger, Walter Benjamin Simulacra & Simulation Baudrillard. Semiotics & Design elements Saussure & Barthes. Visual Structure and Visual Components. Form Content Presentation and ideology, culture.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1The ability to see what makes some images more powerful, persuasive or beautiful than others in certain contexts will be gained.
2Gain the ability to identify what kinds of images can be used to convey both similar and different meanings from other forms of communication.
3analyzing the ways that new technologies shape visual meaning making and create hybrid texts
4In the scope of this course analysis and interpretation of imagesand visual communication materials will be thought to students in order for them to be able to evaluate the aesthetic merit of visuals, articulate the social impact of visuals that would provide with basis of their future production work or images that effectively communicate the intended messages to the audience
