COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of theories and main concepts related to adolescent development. It is aimed to have in-depth knowledge about the biological, social and emotional changes experienced in adolescence and emerging adulthood.
Course Content Contents of the course include the subjects such as basic characteristics of adolescence period, physical, cognitive, personality and moral development of adolescence, peer and family relationships, academic development. In this course, adolescent development will be examined in social contexts (e.g. school, community, media) by considering adolescence as a period of crisis and opportunities.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Explains the major theories of adolescent development (e.g., behavioral, social-emotional, cognitive).
2Explains important topical issues (e.g. family relationships, identity formation) in modern adolescent development.
3Describes the basic biological and contextual/cultural influences on adolescent development.
4Explains the bidirectional interactions between the developing adolescent and a dynamic environment.
5Learns about the changes and challenges faced by adolescents.
6Understands how society needs to deal with problems of youth unemployment, teenage pregnancy, and juvenile crime.
7Learns about developmental, emotional and behavioral problems in adolescence (e.g. suicide, risk taking behaviors).
8Summarizes and reviews literature about selected topics.
