COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective 1. Teaches the basics of language development across the lifespan. 2. The aim of this course is not only to provide theoretical knowledge about language development, but also to help students gain critical thinking ability by encouraging them to discuss current research findings in groups. 3. In addition, students are expected to learn group dynamics and respect their peers' different perspectives. 4. This course will also be useful for those who want to work as developmental psychologists at private hospitals or kindergartens in the future. To train qualified developmental psychologists, this course gives an idea of how to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life settings outside the classroom.
Course Content By the end of this course, the students will be knowledgeable about variety of language related topics such as theories of language development, neurological basis of language development, developmental changes from infancy to old adulthood, language disorders, cultural effects on language, and second language acquisition/bilingualism, etc.

1Define and explain language components, theories, developmental milestones in language, neurology of language, language disorders, bilingualism and effect of culture on language.

5Develop effective communication skills by the help of group work
6Apply theoretical knowledge about language development to practical settings.
7List suggestions for parents with babies about typical language development and ways to improve language skills of their babies.
