Course Objective The aim of this course is to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of geometric and wave optics, properties of light such as diffraction, interference, reflection and polarisation, to the science of photonics based on the optical properties of light, to learn its working principles and application areas.
Course Content Geometrical optics (light beam), generation, transmission, modulation, amplification, transformation, polarisation, reflection and perception of light. Types of prisms, lenses and imaging instruments. Electromagnetic theory of light, electromagnetic spectrum, wave equation. Interference and diffraction of light. Wave propagation in dielectric media and optical waveguides. Fibre optics. Optical sources and amplifiers. Light emitting diodes (LED), light sensors, photomultipliers, photodiodes, lasers, colour displays, optical thermometers, scintillators.
