Course Objective The aim of this course is to enable students to learn spontaneous or induced defect structures in solids and to gain knowledge about the basic principles and application areas of optical and luminescence mechanisms.
Course Content Point, linear, interfacial and volume defects in solid structures. Defects created by external additives such as transition metal ions, rare earth ions, alkali and alkaline earth ions in solid structures. Optical properties of solid materials. Luminescence phenomenon and mechanism. Materials showing luminescence properties. Excitation mechanism in luminescent materials. Broadcasting mechanism in luminescent materials. Radiative and non-radiative transitions. Energy transfer. Thermoluminescence, photoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, radioluminescence, cathodoluminescence, bioluminescence, luminescence applications.
