Course Objective The aim of this course is to evaluate the basic principles of cultivation of seed vegetables, seed collection and cleaning methods, preservation and preparation of vegetable seeds for market.
Course Content Definition of seed and the characteristics sought in a quality seed. Technical terms used in vegetable seed production and their explanations. Current status and problems of vegetable seed production in Turkey, production stages of commercial vegetable seeds. Seed grades and seed values in vegetable seeds. Ecological factors affecting vegetable seed production (light, temperature, rainfall, wind etc.). Factors to be considered in vegetable seed production planning. Harvest criteria for seed vegetables, seed separation methods, seed drying techniques, seed cleaning. Preservation and spraying of vegetable seeds. Seed viability tests. Seed strength tests. Seedling production in vegetables. Propagation by cuttings. Propagation by vaccination. Propagation by dipping.
