COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective To be able to comprehend the conscious and unconscious breeding methods in the historical development of agriculture. To understand the use of basic breeding principles in different plants. To understand the basic differences between self-fertilized and foreign fertilized species. To understand the inheritance of agronomic values. To understand the principles of variety purification and development of new varieties.
Course Content Definition and purpose of plant breeding. Issues to be considered in the preparation of plant breeding program. Important technical terms used in breeding and their analysis. Gene centers and homelands of horticultural plant species. Breeding methods applied in self-fertilized plant species (induction, selection, hybridization breeding, interspecific hybridization). Breeding methods applied in foreign fertilized plants (Induction, selection, hybridization breeding, obtaining synthetic and hybrid varieties, convergence breeding). The importance of haploidy and polyploidy in plant breeding and methods of obtaining them. Male sterility and incompatibility in horticultural crops and utilization of incompatibility in breeding. Breeding of vegetatively produced plants.
