Course Objective The aim of this course is to teach the origin and cultural history, economic importance, pomological characteristics, fertilization biology, physiology, ecological requirements, propagation and seedling production, garden management techniques, harvesting and post-harvesting practices and pests of the important hard-shell fruit species (hazelnut, walnut, chestnut, pistachio and almond) in Turkey.
Course Content The content of this course covers the cultural history, place in plant systematics, botanical classification, fruit characteristics, important varieties, economic importance, morphological and biological characteristics, fertilization biology, ecological requirements, seedling production, rootstocks used, garden establishment techniques, annual maintenance works, harvest and post-harvest practices, preservation, diseases and pests of hard-shell fruit species (hazelnut, walnut, chestnut, pistachio and almond) important in Turkey.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Learns the cultural history and origin, place in plant systematics, and botanical classification of nuts fruit species (hazelnut, walnut, chestnut, pistachio and almond) which are economically important for our country.
2Learns the pomological characteristics of nuts fruit species, important varieties in our country and in the world, morphological and biological characteristics and fertilization biology.
3 Learns the causes of flower and fruit casts and the measures required to reduce casts.
4Learns the composition of nuts fruit species and their importance in our nutrition.
5Learns and applies the breeding objectives, breeding techniques and the causes of periodicity and measures to reduce it.
6Learns the ecological requirements of nuts fruit species and the rootstocks used in them, learns and applies propagation and seedling production techniques, garden establishment techniques and annual maintenance works.
7Learns and applies harvesting principles, mechanical harvesting techniques, harvesting and post-harvest applications, preservation, disease-pests and their control of nuts fruit species.
