COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of this course is to enable students to recognize the pests that cause damage to plant crops at the level of phylum or order, to comprehend their biology, damage patterns and control methods. To give basic information about the morphological structures, symptom types, distribution patterns, general characteristics of weeds, benefits and damages of fungal, bacterial and viral agents causing diseases in plants and to teach the control methods of these agents.
Course Content Causes of disease, general characteristics of plant pathogens, symptoms, spread and transport of pathogens, epidemiology, basic control methods, insect morphology, function and structure of insect systems, growth and development of insects, insect ecology and control methods, classification, general characteristics of plant pest mites and nematodes, diseases and pests and pest control methods.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Knows symptoms of abiotic factors and give recommendations to solve abiotic disease problems,
2Recognize the general characteristics and symptoms of biotic causes of disease such as fungi, bacteria and viruses,
3Identify semi-parasitic and parasitic plants, knows differences of these plants from weed species and give recommendations to control weeds and parasitic plants,
4Identify diseases of some important horticultural and agronomic crops,
5Understands the ways of transmission and spread of disease agents,
6Have information about disease control methods (sanitation, resistant plants, biological, mechanical and chemical) and their practical applications in agriculture.
7Recognize the animal pests which are belong to Nematoda, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda (Arachnida, Insecta), Chordata’s Phylums,
8Have knowledge on general pest management and control principles.
