COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Bachelor's Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Objective This course aims to introduce undergraduate students from all faculties and departments to the STEAM approach, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, at both conceptual and applied levels. Through a blended structure of conceptual sessions, hands-on workshops and a team-based final project, the course develops students' competencies in interdisciplinary thinking, design thinking, systems thinking, computational thinking, creativity and responsible innovation. Students are expected to define, prototype and present a real-world problem (preferably aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) within a heterogeneous team, and to critically use generative artificial intelligence tools in accordance with academic integrity principles. The course is aligned with Level 6 of the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYC) and Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), targeting 21st-century competencies such as analytical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, digital/AI literacy and sustainability awareness.
Course Content Conceptual framework and historical development of the STEAM approach; differences between interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches; defining interdisciplinary problems in the context of 21st-century competencies and the sustainable development goals; the design thinking cycle and its applications; systems thinking and computational thinking; data literacy and data visualization workshops; physical computing and maker culture practices; theories of creativity and group creativity; illustrative practices at the intersection of science, art and society; principles of responsible research and innovation, research and design ethics; critical, ethical and academically honest use of generative artificial intelligence tools; science communication and storytelling; division of labor, feedback and peer assessment in heterogeneous teams; digital portfolio development; production of an interdisciplinary final project in a juried presentation and public exhibition format.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Distinguishes and compares the STEAM approach from interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary educational models with concrete examples.
2Applies the design thinking cycle (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) and the engineering design process (problem identification, defining criteria and constraints, generating solutions, modeling, testing and iterative improvement) in an integrated manner to a real-world problem.
3Designs and produces an original interdisciplinary prototype that integrates science, art and technology components in the context of a Sustainable Development Goal.
4Critically uses generative artificial intelligence tools within the framework of academic integrity principles and documents the usage process.
5Establishes roles, responsibilities and division of labor within a team composed of members from different disciplines; manages feedback and conflict resolution processes.
6Represents project outputs in digital portfolio, juried presentation and public exhibition formats in accordance with academic and visual criteria.
