COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The course examines the concept of science, the knowledge it provides and the way in which the production of knowledge is organised in society. In addition, the autonomy of scientific knowledge and its dominant position on other types of information are evaluated on the basis of social factors.
Course Content This module will introduce students to some major trends in twentieth-century epistemology. Rapid progress in the sciences has confronted epistemology with a fundamental problem: Is scientific knowledge isolated from all sociological factors? The module will acquaint students with some prominent answers to this problem (positivism, sociology of knowledge, historical epistemology). It will present a perspective on epistemology that overcomes the existing divides between analytical and continental philosophy.
