Course Objective This course aims to enable students to gain deep insight about the criteria observed in selecting, adapting, evaluating and utilizing ELT material by taking into account L2 proficiency level, age, gender, interests and traits of personality variations of the target-group students.
Course Content Theory and principles of ELT materials design (e.g.: selecting, adapting, developing and evaluating materials) and the basic arguments for and against the use of coursebooks in the classroom; the relation between methodology, ideology, and the coursebook writer; the criteria for the selection of language materials: suitability, the students’ proficiency level, learnability, ease of use, cultural content, availability of communicative interaction and language use, and availability of authentic materials set in a real-world context which allows learners to interact with each other or the teacher in meaningful ways; adapting or developing materials for language teaching: adapting coursebook materials to particular learning needs and teaching contexts, designing teaching materials and supplementing materials parallel to the methodology, to the level and needs of the students and to present school environment; evaluation of materials and text books used in EFL classroom settings, language material and textbook evaluation criteria and ways to relate materials design to current ELT methodology.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1They will be able to explain the theories and principles related to materials evaluation and development (e.g. selection of materials, adaptation, development, and evaluation)
2They will be able to explain the basic opinions in favor of / against using textbook.
3They will be able to identify the relationship between method, approach, and textbook preparation.
4They gain experience in the selection of class materials.
5They will be able to adapt class materials for language teaching and develop them.
6They will be able to evaluate class materials with respect to students’ language proficiency, learnability, usability, cultural content, suitability for effective communication, and language use.
7They gain experience in the selection of authentic materials reflecting the real life situations which help the learners in their communication with their peers and teacher.
8They will be able to design their own class materials in line with the method, level of students, their needs, and the physical setting.
9They will be able to apply a set of criteria for textbook evaluation.
10They will be able to select language teaching materials in line with evaluation criteria, trendy language teaching methods and learner needs.
