Course Objective The particular aim of the course is to introduce to the students the basic issues in classroom research methods and also to enable them to conduct research in real language classes. More specifically, by the end of the term, the students should be able to demonstrate that they understand the major issues concerning classroom research; develop personal awareness of classroom contexts; and are able to conduct research regarding classroom-related issues in language classrooms.
Course Content Action research, how to select & develop a research subject,stages and ways of data collection, observation and interview techiques, stages of questionnaire design,features of qualitative research design, case study, analyzing sample research papers.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

1Students can explain the stages of classroom-learning-oriented research.

5Students can differentiate qualitative and quantitative research methods and use them for classroom research.
6Students can follow the literature whilst carrying out classroom research.
7Students can report the findings derived from classroom research.
8Students can transform the findings derived from classroom research into manners in order to develop themselves professionally.
9Students can develop a critical overview towards the classroom teaching and learning process.

1 What is action research? Reflective cycle and professional development through action research. Classroom research methods (Chaudran, C., 1988, in Second Language Classrooms: research on teaching and learning, Cambridge University Press) TASK: Search for an article on action research (published in a journal preferably, e.g. ELT JOURNAL) and prepare a review of it focusing on its aim, data collection procedure, and findings.
2 Selecting and developing a topic
3 Data Collection: Reliability & Validity of data collection instruments /tools, quantitative vs. qualitative approach, ways of collecting data: field notes, logs, journals, diaries, personal accounts etc.
4 Using verbal reports: self–report, self-observation, think-aloud, problematic aspects of verbal reports, reasons for using verbal reports. TASK: Design a VERBAL REPORT BASED action research in your own EFL setting.
5 Observation techniques
6 Developing a questionnaire: how to construct, administer a questionnaire, and how to process questionnaire data
7 Interview as a tool for data collection: structured, unstructured, and semi-structured interviews, sample article on “Learner strategies and learner interviews” (pp. 153-159).
