COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Master's Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Objective Examine the role of moonoxgenases in normal metabolic pathways and xenobiotics metabolism in detail along with the current publications.
Course Content Fundamental concepts on oxidases and oxygenases. Mechanism of action of monooxygenases. Special emphasis will be given on human enzymes including cytochrome P450- and cytochrome b5-dependent monooxygenases, flavin containing monooxygenases and nitric oxide synthase. Their importance in health and disease. Their structure, active sites, endogenous and exogenous substrates, structure-activity relationships, membrane topology, isomeric forms, molecular biology, gene structures and control mechanisms. Functions in human biochemistry including cholesterol, steroid hormone and vitamin synthesis and degradation, in drug metabolism and chemical carcinogenesis. The course includes lectures and discussions of recent journal articles.
