Course Objective This course is designed to explore the process of adapting fantasy universes from literature or other media into television series. Through the study of case studies, critical readings, and discussions, students will analyze the challenges and creative decisions involved in bringing fantastical worlds to the screen in episodic format. The course will cover topics such as narrative structure, character development, visual effects, fan reception, and the cultural impact of these adaptations.
Course Content This course aims to comprehend the principles of adaptation theory and apply them to television series adapted from fantasy universes. You will analyze the narrative, thematic, and aesthetic elements of selected fantasy TV series adaptations, assess the fidelity of adaptations to their source material, and evaluate the impact of changes on the adaptation's reception. Additionally, you will examine the role of fan communities and transmedia storytelling in shaping the reception and longevity of TV series adaptations. You will develop critical thinking and communication skills throughout the course through class discussions, presentations, and written assignments.
