BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

General Information

Our department was established within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1994 and admitted its first students in the 1999-2000 academic year. As of 2022-2023 autumn term, it continues its education, training, research and development activities within the Faculty of Science. The Biology Department is located in Kınıklı Campus, 10 km away from the city centre, in the Faculty of Science, Block B. The Biology Department has 15 research laboratories, 1 student laboratory, 1 department museum and 1 herbarium. The Department of Biology consists of 4 main disciplines: Botany, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Zoology. All of the research laboratories are equipped with basic laboratory equipment used in their fields of study. Biology department, student laboratory and research laboratories are equipped with ice machine, light microscopes, stereomicroscopes, deep freezer and pure water system, oven, pH meter, magnetic stirrer, refrigerators (+4/-20), scales (rough and precision), vortex, autoclave, heating table, high speed centrifuge, microcentrifuge, desktop centrifuge, single and double wave spectrophotometer, fume cupboards, incubators and water baths, PCR, rotary evaporator, lyophiliser, gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), sonicator, microtome, phase-contrast microscope, fluorescence microscope, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and pasteur ovens. There is also a unit where experimental animals are maintained for researchers within the university.

Objective

The aim of the department is to train graduates who are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of life sciences, committed to ethical values, have the knowledge and skills to carry out current research and applications. In addition, it is to follow the graduate studies of the majority of the graduates in Turkey and abroad. The goal of our department is to provide educational opportunities in important research topics emerging in the field of biology. Considered as the science of the 21st century, biological sciences have a vital importance for Turkey due to the necessity in the creation of environmental policy with the protection of biological riches and making the sectors using biotechnology effective. Biological sciences offer the opportunity to work in various fields on biological principles that govern the behaviour of living matter at the molecular, cellular, organismal and population levels. Major topics such as molecular and cellular biology, genetics, physiology, embryology, microbiology, microbiology, biochemistry, plant and animal biology, environmental biology, plant and animal systematics are included in the course catalogues to prepare students for work in research and teaching, industry, agriculture, forestry and public health.
